USING RICHARD MATHESON'S I AM LEGEND TO ANALYZE THE MEANING OF HUMANITY
COMPARING THE NOVEL AND MOVIE
Richard Matheson's I Am Legend
When someone hears the words I Am Legend, typically the first thing that comes to mind is Will Smith and the movie that was created in 2007. Many know of the novel, but have not and have no plans of reading it. The novel and the movie both have similarities, but the major difference is the portrayal of the creatures. They are displayed as having no human characteristics in the movie, but have their own society in the novel. The original story line is altered too much for the movie to the point that they can really be taken as separate entities. There is an alternate ending that did not receive as good of a reception as the blast-off ending that was changed. In the alternate ending for the movie the zombies leave Will Smith after he gives the woman he stole from them back to them. They can reason, and we receive a fantastic shot of all the others that he killed in his scientific studies. We see that he sees their human characteristics, but the public would rather believe them to just be monsters who should be killed and changed. They are inhuman zombie-like creatures in the movie that are only there to cause destruction. In the novel, they are vampires that actually change to become more human-like to create their own society.
